If you are looking for a new job, you know how stressful and nerve-wracking interviews can be. You want to impress the interviewer and show them that you are the best person for the job. But how do you do that?
In this blog post, I'm going to share with you my proven method to ace any job interview. I'm Ryan, a senior HR manager at a public company, and I've interviewed around 200 candidates in my career. I'm also a mentor at ExpertEase, a platform that connects you with experts across every niche and field. Whether you need professional guidance, project assistance, online learning, or just a chat with a pro, ExpertEase will find and match the right person for you.
Ever wondered what sets successful candidates apart? It boils down to one crucial factor: preparation. As I reveal my insights, you'll learn how to amplify your chances of securing that offer significantly.
So, how can you do this? Allow me to introduce you to my "big-medium-small" approach, a simple yet effective method that can set you on the path to interview victory. But what exactly does each step entail?
Imagine scanning the industry landscape. Consider this: if you're pursuing a marketing role in higher education, delve into the industry's shifts over the past two years. Understand the driving forces, challenges, and opportunities shaping its trajectory. Identify the needs and expectations of the key stakeholders—students, parents, and more. By comprehending these dynamics, you're arming yourself with valuable knowledge to stand out.
Next, analyze the company's performance. Delve into its main products or services, financial standing, target audience (B2B or B2C), and value proposition. Grasp the issues the company seeks to resolve, explore its various business arms, and discern its competitive edge. This knowledge paints a vivid picture of where you fit into the puzzle.
It will also show the interviewer that you have done your research and that you have a clear and specific understanding of the company. It will also help you to answer questions like "Why do you want to work for this company?" or "What are some of the things that you like or admire about this company?"
Zoom in on the job description. Communicate with HR about the role's key performance indicators (KPIs). Tailor your approach to suit metrics like user growth or customer conversion. Align your experience and skills with the description's keywords—whether it's content creation, data analysis, or event planning. Showcase how your achievements align with the role's requirements, underscoring your suitability.
Accessing this wealth of information might seem like a daunting task, but with some online research and digging, you'll be well-equipped to tackle any question. Armed with this knowledge, you'll provide insights that resonate during your interview.
Preparation doesn't stop there. Always rehearse your answers to common questions and anticipate different angles:
Think ahead and be authentic — interviewers can spot genuineness from a mile away.
In essence, personalize your preparation using my "big-medium-small" approach. Uncover industry trends, grasp the company's strategy, and hone in on the role's core requirements. By rehearsing responses using the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result), you'll portray yourself as a strategic thinker—an ideal candidate in the eyes of any hiring manager.
